(BrE) reception class = the lowest class in an infant school

(BrE) junior school: voor leerlingen van 7-11 jaar
(AmE) pre-school = ‘kleuterschool’, algemene benaming voor onderwijs voorafgaand aan het basisonderwijs.re-schools (in the U.S., pre-school education programs are “available for children from ages three to five. Many of these programs follow similar curriculum as pre-kindergarten.”, zie Wikipedia link)
(AmE) nursery school = pre-kindergarten school (leeftijd 3-5)

– I was trying cases when you were doing preschool (…). (Steve Martini, Compelling Evidence, chapter 16)

2. basisschool (elementary- / primary- / grade- / grammar school)

Throughout her elementary and junior high school days, she and Momma were about as close as a mother and daughter could get. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 1)

Among, say, the several hundred boys in my elementary school between the ages of five and fourteen (…), surely far fewer fistfights broke out than in any of the other neighborhood schools (…) (Philip Roth, The Plot Against America, chapter 8, vertaald door Ko Kooman)

– They know we went to grade school and high school together and, for that matter, Sunday school. (…) I would come out in favor of same-sex marriages, survivor’s rights for same-sex couples, gay-sex education starting in elementary school (…). (Tom Wolfe, A Man in Full, chapter 4)

(1) pre-school
(2) grade school (“primair onderwijs”, basisschool, globale leeftijden 6-14: grade 1 to grade 9, of 6-16: grade 1 to grade 12)
(3) high school (“secundair onderwijs”, middelbare school, globale leeftijden 14-18)
(4) college (“tertiair onderwijs”, hoger beroepsonderwijs en universitair onderwijs)

They all act like they’re in the seventh grade or something (…)

The same long-legged blonde I fell for in eleventh grade. (Stephen Frey, The Day Trader, ch. 1)
– And that night so long ago, in the fall of our senior year in high school, when she surrendered to me in the back of my parents’ old Chevvy, was my first experience. (Stephen Frey, The Day Trader, ch. 2)

Teddy on stage, showing off. Something a kid in junior high might do. (Elmore Leonard, Glitz, chapter 26)
In junior high, (…) crib notes and the brokering of homework were the path of passage (…). (Steve Martini, Compelling Evidence, chaper 25)
He has a wife and two sons, one in high school, one in middle school. (Steve Martini, Double Tap, chapter 14)
Sarah was out of school, in that awkward gap between fifth grade and middle school (…). (Steve Martini, The Attorney, chapter 1)

Vertalerstips:
It had to have been twenty-five years ago, because he was in the ninth grade at Holy Redeemer (…). (…). She would have to be at least fifty. Twelve years older than he was.

(BrE) primary school = basisschool

(BrE) primary school = school for children between the ages of 4 or 5 and 11
(AmE, old-fashioned) primary school = (AmE) elementary school

“(…) there are in reality but two courses of instruction, the higher course pursued in the high schools, and the elementary course carried on in the grammar and primary schools. It must not be supposed that the grammar grade answers to the grammar schools in England. On the contrary, the grammar grades are merely the higher elementary grades. (…) It is important to bear this distinction in mind. The primary schools and the grammar schools are but one course, and all children are expected to pass from the primary schools into the grammar schools. (…) The line of demarcation between the primary and grammar schools is an arbitrary one, which was adopted merely for the sake of convenience in the organization and management of the schools. It is not known to the law, and has no important significance in respect to the age, instruction, or destination of pupils. All the pupils of the primary schools are expected to pass into the grammar schools (…).
The course of study in the several departments and grades varies in the different cities (…). It is very difficult to institute any comparison between the grades in American schools and the standards of our English code. (…) An English child is introduced to the first standard at the age of seven, having had, it is presumed, some preliminary instruction in the infant school. Six years are assigned to the six standards, each standard being supposed to embrace a year’s work. The American  pupil enters school at five or six years of age, without any preliminary teaching. (…) The primary course generally comprises six grades as in New York or Boston [with half-yearly promotions!]; or five grades, as in Cincinnati and Chicago. In point of time, it is supposed to occupy sometimes three years, as in Boston; sometimes four, as in New York; sometimes five, as in Cincinnati.” (pp. 207-209)

“Salinas had two grammar schools (…). [One of them had ] grades from third to eighth. (…) The first- and second graders went to Baby school.” Hier kregen Aron en Caleb les.
[Cathy Ames] finished the eight grades of grammar school with such a good record that her parents entered her in the small high school, although in that time it was not usual for a girl to go on with her studies. (…). Cathy was fourteen when she entered high school.” (hfdst. 8)

De basisschool was gewoon ‘school’ (“Very few youths went past the eighth grade in those days, and what with farm duties some of them took fourteen or fifteen years to do it”, East of Eden, hfdst 14)

“Hazel grew up – did four years in grammar school, four years in reform school, and didn’t learn anything in either place.”

I’m told there’s a fourth [grandchild] running around out there somewhere, probably in grammar school. If I had a pretty little granddaughter, I’d send her to that school and tell her to make friends. The kid’s going to be rich someday. (Steve Martini, The Arraignment/De Afspraak, vertaald door Hugo Huipers, hfdst. 13)
– Anthony attended Our Lady of Guadeloupe Grammar School in Brooklyn and Regis High School. (Robert F. Kennedy, The Real Anthony Fauci, p.127)

“Let me make it clear: this grammar school boy will take no lessons from that public school boy on the importance of children from less privileged backgrounds gaining access to university.”

(BrE) primary school         (AmE) elementary school

3. middelbare school = secondary school /  middle school / high school / upper school
high school’
.
Vergelijk (BrE) high school
The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English (3e editie, 2009) geeft de volgende Usage Note:
“In England the phrase ‘high school‘ is used chiefly in the names of state secondary schools that are or have been selective (i.e. grammar schools): ‘she went to Slough High School for Girls’.
Elsewehere, ‘high school’ is typically more or less synonymous with ‘secondary school‘: ‘she went to high school before she went to college’.”

Voorbeelden (AmE) middle school:
Sarah was out of school, in that awkward gap between fifth grade and middle school (…). (Steve Martini, The Attorney, chapter 1)
– He has a wife and two sons, one in high school, one in middle school. (Steve Martini, Double Tap, chapter 14)
When Hoyt had moved from the lower school to the middle school at Greenwich Country Day, he was a short, slight boy, and two outsize bullies on the class above him picked him out for special torment. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 5)

in St. Louis (USA)

Zie link.

(BrE/AmE archaic) common school = (AmE archaic) free school = (AmE) public school

(AmE) secondary course / secondary education = (AmE) high school: i.e. from the age of 14, after middle school or grade school, so not exactly synonymous with (BrE) secondary school

Voorbeeld (AmE) high school:
– “Where’d you go to secondary school?” – “secondary school?”- “High school.” (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 3)

Rochester Independent College (BrE)
(BrE) primary and secondary schools (AmE) high school

4. Academy

“The Academy program is a ‘school within a school’ and is one of several in operation across the country, funded by a U.S. government grant that pays for reduced class sizes (maximum twenty-five students) and resource periods for teachers to provide personal instruction and counseling to academy students.”

5. (AmE) grade
In Noord Amerika betekent grade zowel ‘klas’ (schooljaar) als ‘beoordelingscijfer’, of (meestal) -letter.
(AmE) ‘grade’ = (obsolete BrE, current IndE) ‘standard’ = (current BrE) form = (Ned.) klas
(AmE) to skip a grade = een klas overslaan

Voorbeeld (AmE) to skip a grade:
– If you skipped a grade in  certain subject, (…) if you made nothing but A pluses, everybody knew about it. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 10)

6. mark/grade
A* (starred first) of A+.
A = first class honours (een top grade voor uitstekend werk, met een hoge percentielscore van bijvoorbeeld 91-100%);
B = upper second class honours (ook wel 2:1 genoemd, voor bovengemiddeld werk met een percentielscore bijv. 82 tot 90%);
D = ordinary grade (ook wel pass genoemd, d.w.z. de laagste voldoende score);
F = failing work (onvoldoende/gezakt);
I = opdracht niet af (incomplete course).
A-minus, B-plus of B-minus).
(BrE) ‘I got good marks/grades in my exams’
(AmE) ‘I got good grades on my exams’

Exley had passed the lieutenant’s exam with very high marks. (James Ellroy’s L.A. Confidential)
Only one African America I’d give high marks to and that’s Old Tom. (Elmore Leonard, Raylan, chapter 9)

7. public school
In Scotland, a public school is a school under the management of an education authority.”

Voorbeeld (AmE) public school (= openbare school) x (AmE) public school (= privéschool):
The suburbs (…) with their stable, well-funded public schools. (Scott Turow, The Laws of Our Fathers, p. 326)
One of the many policy coups of Mayor Goodes’ popular two-term successor was the commercial exploitation of the city’s public schools. The mayor had shrewdly cast the deplorable neglect of the schools as a business opportunity. (Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections, “The Generator”)
She was never very specific about her background. (…) [S]he was  little girl from a decent but quite ordinary family (…) who went to public schools – girls who went to private schools always managed to work that into the conversation within fifteen minutes of meeting you. (Tom Wolfe, A Man in Full, chapter 9)
– Now he had to go to a public school, Greenwich High. Greenwich High had a not-bad acdemic reputation, as public schools went, but it drew a certain element (…). (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 5)
It was a private school, so fancy, so prestigious, it needed no descriptive appendage after its name. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 6)
[I]t never occurred to him that the elementary school he attended (….) might be someweher toward the soggy botom of the Boston public school system. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 7)
Charlotte Simmons was about to ascend from clueless public school hillbilly girl (…) to the summit of female competition at the great Dupont. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 26).

8. college
Zie OALD (9e editie, 2015 ‘college’:

– In both BrE and NAmE a college is a place where you can go to study after you leave secondary school.
– In Britain you can go to a college to study or to receive training in a particular skill.
– In the US you can study for your first degree at a college. A university offers more advanced degrees in addition to first degrees.
– In NAmE college is often used to mean university, especially when talking about people who are studying for their first degree. (…)
– In BrE you can say: “My daughter is at university”. In NAmE you cannot use university or college in this way. You use it with a or the to mean a particular uinversity or college (…)

Voorbeeld (AmE) college:
– I’m trying to save enough to finish up at a four-year college and get a degree, Mr. Croker. (Tom Wolfe, A Man In Full, chapter 30)
– … college mania (…) to get one’s offspring into prestigiuos universities. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 1)

9. (BrE) college

(Zie OALD ‘college’)

The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English (3e editie, 2009) geeft de volgende Usage Note:
“In CE ‘a university’ is a building or an institution (… ‘she goes to a university near her home’). In BE ‘university’ is the educational activity that goes on in a university (…’university takes up a lot of her time’…). In AE the examples above would have to be re-phrased (e.g. ‘university work takes up a lot of her time’…). A very likely alternative in AE would be to use ‘college’ (‘college takes up a lot of her time …’).”

11. (AmE) (graduate) school = een universitaire faculteit
School of Medicine / Medical School (Faculteit der Geneeskunde), Dental School (Faculteit der Tandheelkunde), Law School (Faculteit der Rechten), Business School (Economische Faculteit), School of Divinity (Theologische Faculteit = Department of Theology, “the theology department”, zie Turow, Laws of Our Fathers, pp. 89, 101), etc; het gaat dan om Master’s- en PhD-opleidingen (i.t.t. faculteiten met alleen eerstegraads BA– of BS-studies, die meestal met College worden aangeduid).
Vergelijk (BrE) postgraduate eduction / a postgradute study. Zie ook Wikipedia (link):
The term “graduate school” is used more widely by North American universities than by those in the UK. However, numerous universities in the UK have formally launched graduate schools, including the University of Birmingham, Durham University, Keele University, the University of Nottingham, Bournemouth University, Queen’s University Belfast and the University of London, which includes graduate schools at King’s College London, Royal Holloway and University College London. They often coordinate the supervision and training of candidates for doctorates.

Voorbeeld (AmE) graduate school / grad school / school:
He started grad school in philosophy (…) and then (…) made the change to law school. (Scott Turow, Innocent, ch. 9)
Up ’til then, students like us used to just go to graduate school and become college teachers. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlote Simmons, chapter 12)
They didn’t know how nearly perfect your grade point average had to be to go to graduate school at any major university in America. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 27)
“How many years did you have to go to school after you graduated from high school?” asked a heavyset black woman. – “Seventeen years, if you include residencies and the year I was a fellow.”

Up ’til then, students like us used to just go to graduate school and become college teachers.
– They didn’t know how nearly perfect your grade point average had to be to go to graduate school at any major university in America.

(AmE) faculty = docententeam, onderwijzend personeel, faculteitsleden, sectieleden
(BrE) faculty = (universiteits)faculteit, afdeling
The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English (3e editie, 2009) geeft de volgende Usage Note:
“In AE, the teaching staff of an educational institution is typically called its ‘faculty’.”
Note: in een aantal oude Amerikaanse  universiteiten (Ivy League universities zoals Harvard) worden de faculteiten ook wel met “faculty”aandgeduid, zoals in “the Faculty of Arts and Sciences”.

Zie bijvoorbeeld de website van een Canadese Faculty of Medicine (link);
York): Faculty of Computing and Information Science (link).

Voorbeelden (AmE) faculty = onderwijzend personeel:
(…) he was admitted to Damon Law school amid protests from faculty and alumni (…) (Scott Turow, The Laws of Our Fathers, p. 163)
More than three-quarters of the faculty voted in favor. (Scott Turow, The Laws of Our Fathers, p. 265)
This morning the faculty had voted to declare the university on strike. (…) . (Scott Turow, The Laws of Our Fathers, p. 388)
faculty and students reviling Richard Nixon to the celebration of enormous applause. (Scott Turow, The Laws of Our Fathers, p. 388)
Junior faculty lived in semi-squalor > de lagere wetenschappelijke staf (Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections, “The Failure”, vertaald door Marian Lameris et al, De Correcties)
[T]he committee (…) drafted the college’s stringent new policy on faculty-student contacts > contacten tussen docenten en studenten  (Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections, “The Failure”, vertaald door Marian Lameris et al, De Correcties)
(…) faculty live in town (…) (Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections, “The Failure”)
outraged students and junior faculty had organized boycotts (…) (Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections, “The Failure”)
The area was condo city, graduate students and undergrads from the university, along with faculty and support staff. (Steve Martini, The Jury, Prologue, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)
“And you remained at the university on faculty. Is that correct?” – “A teaching assistant. Graduate fellow”, she says. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 1, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)
It was the kind of dwelling leased by faculty from the university. (Steve Martini, The Simeon Chamber, chapter 11)
The college has strict rules against faculty dating undergraduates, and for nearly a year he fought off the urge to ask her out. (Steve Martini, Critical Mass, chapter 6)
If the faculty wanted copies, they had to order them made themselves (…). (Steve Martini, Prime Witness, chapter 24)
“The university is a big place,” he says, “forty-six thousand students, twelve hundred faculty.” (Steve Martini, Prime Witness, chapter 33)
Dr. Lieberman, the village orchestra, the staff and faculty, and the fifty children of the Exodus were all clustered around the bronze statue of Dafna on the center green. (Leon Uris, Exodus, chapter 3)
The primary principle the staff and faculty was able to inculcate upon these children was that their lives had a purpose. (Leon Uris, Exodus, chapter 3)
She’s such a grind, such a suck-up to the faculty, because she not only gets perfect grades, but cares about it (…). (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 1)
You had to become a college president to know how powerful the faculty could be when aroused. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 26)
– But there was no instructing the faculty to keep mum about such things and cooperate. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 26)
– [H]e had challenged all progressives on campus, students, faculty, administrators, employees, all and whomever. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 29)
– Kate was thrown pretty continually in with the younger faculty, (…) because as a woman (…) she was simply invisible to those who still viewed Harvard as an all-male institution. (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 5) [= the younger faculty members]
Most of our best students are women (…), so it seems only right that they should have at least one representative of their sex on the faculty of the department. (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, 1981, chapter 11) [Note: (AmE) faculty = faculteitsleden, onderwijzend personeel / department = faculteit]
She sat in her fine seat under the old trees in the Harvard Yard, and watch the graduating classesmarch in, and the faculty, and those receiving honorary degrees. (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 13)

Voorbeeld BrE:
Oxford University still consists not of faculties or groups of subjects but of individual colleges, established from the very beginning by secular and ecclesiastical benefactors. (Europa Reformata, 2016, chapter on Oxford, by Martin Ohst)

More than three-quarters of the faculty voted in favor. > Ruim drie-kwart van de faculteit stemde voor. (Scott Turow, The Laws of Our Fathers / De Wet van de Macht, p. 257)
The teachers go crazy at these plces now. [O]ne of the things we tried to do on the campuses was to break down that wall of formality between the faculty and the students, because it was nothing but an instrument of control. (Tom Wolfe , The Bonfire of the Vanities, chapter 9, vertaald door Jan Fastenau et al.)

In the European ECTS system, transcripts are called Transcript of Records (ToR), and are used to document the performance of a student over a certain period of time by listing the course units or modules taken, the credits gained, and the grades awarded. The Transcript of Records provides a standard format for recording all study activities carried out by students. It is an essential tool for academic recognition.(zie wikipedia)

(Zie www.fulbright.org.uk)

Voorbeelden (AmE) transcript = (Ned) leerdossier, cijferoverzicht, studieresultaten:
It was just dawning on him what catastrophe his college transcript was going to be (…). [H]e’d still have C’s and B-minuses that were already on his transcript (…) [T]he i-banks went over your transcript with a vengeance. Even B’s made you a questionable case, and B-minuses and C’s might as well be F’s.
I’ll have a suspension – for cheating – on my transcript. (…) He wasn’t going to (…) explain away his transcript (…).  > Hier komt in mijn dossier – geschorst wegens fraude. (…) studieresultaten (…).(Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 32, vertaald door Wim Scherpenisse et al. )
Your transcript will be a passport good at any door on Wall Street.

(BrE) head teacher / head / head of school
(AmE) principal
Dit zijn geslachtsneutrale varianten van schoolmaster/schoolmistress (hoofd der school); met name in de Britseindependent schools (dit zijn selectieve, particulieren scholen) worden de traditionele benamingen headmaster en headmistress nog algemeen gebruikt;
The Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses.

20. dagelijkse leiding van universiteit of faculteit:  chancellor / vice-chancellor (of a university) / president / provost / dean
(BrE) Chancellor = (ere-)voorzitter

Vergelijk (AmE) president (of a university) / (AmE) chancellor / (AmE) provost / (AmE) dean:

Zie bijv.

Zie wikipedia (link):
A dean is usually the head of a significant collection of departments within a university (e.g., “dean of the downtown campus”, “dean of the college of arts and sciences”, “dean of the school of medicine”)
Other senior administrative positions in higher education may also carry the title of dean (or a lesser title such as associate dean or assistant dean). For example, many colleges and universities have a position known as “dean of students”, who is in charge of student affairs, and a “dean of the faculty”, who serves as the faculty’s voice in the school’s day-to-day administration.
– Almost every American law school, medical school, divinity school, or other professional school is part of a university, and so refers to its highest-ranking administrator as a dean. Most have several assistant or associate deans as well (such as an associate dean of academics or an associate dean of students), as well as a select few vice deans.
The term or office of dean is much less common in American secondary education. Although most high schools are led by a principal or headmaster, a few (particularly private preparatory schools) refer to their chief authority as a dean. In large schools or some boarding schools there may be a dean of men or boys, and a dean of women or girls, or each year (freshman, sophomore, etc.) may have a dean. Some junior high schools and high schools have a teacher or administrator referred to as a dean who is in charge of student discipline and to some degree administrative services.

(BrE) dean = faculteitshoofd. Zie wikipedia (link):
– In some universities in the United Kingdom the term dean is used for the head of a faculty, a collection of related academic departments. Examples include Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Similar usage is found in Australia and New Zealand.
– In collegiate universities such as Oxford and Cambridge, each college may have a dean who is responsible for discipline. An interview with the dean as a result of misbehaviour is referred to as a being deaned. The dean may also, or instead, be responsible for the running of the college chapel.

Voorbeelden (AmE) chancellor:
We have orders from the chancellor’s office not to touch anything. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 9, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)
– Deans and chancellors, it seems, have to entertain. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 14, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)
Seems the chancellor at one of the other campuses took a dive on insurance fraude a few years back. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 14, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)
Seems this chancellor spent a bundle of state money buying silverware to entertain. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 14, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)
[T]he chancellor’s office steps in like the Pope (…). You screw with the chancellor, you find yourself in academic hell. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 14, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)

Voorbeeld (AmE) president = (Ned) rector-magnificus:
– Frederick Cutler III, B.A., Harvard, Ph. D., Dupont, (…) was the president of Dupont. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 26)
The president’s salary was four hundred thousand a year. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 26)

the college provost (…) had all but guaranteed lifelong employment. (Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections, “The Failure”)

I recognize one of the vice-chancellors, the woman in charge of legal affairs. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 18, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)

Voorbeelden (AmE) dean:
Charlotte told her about the speech by the dean of Dupont College at the “frosh” convocation.
Deans and chancellors, it seems, have to entertain. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 14, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)

21. (AmE) assistant professor / associate professor (= universitair hoofddocent) / full professor (info. from:  link):

Assistant professor: the entry-level position, for which one usually needs a Ph.D. or other doctorate; a master’s degree may suffice, especially at community colleges or in fields for which there is a terminal master’s degree. In some areas, such as the natural sciences, it is uncommon to grant assistant professor positions to recently graduated Ph.D.s, and nearly all assistant professors will have completed some time as postdoctoral fellows. The position is generally not tenured, although in most institutions, the term is used for “tenure-track” positions; that is, the candidate can become tenured after a probationary period—anywhere from 3 to 7 years. Rates for achieving tenure vary, depending on the institutions and areas of study; in most places at least 50% of assistant professors are tenured and promoted to associate professors after the sixth year; however, this number can be as low as 10% in natural sciences departments of top universities, or over 70% in non-Ph.D. granting schools. In unusual circumstances it is possible to receive tenure but to remain as an assistant professor, typically when tenure is awarded early. Traditionally, in an effort to diversify the academic pool, universities prefer to hire those who have graduated from a different university and not someone who may be a former student. This remains true for all levels.

Associate professor: the mid-level position, usually awarded (in the humanities and social sciences) after a substantial publication record, such as a book, book contract, or second book–although the requirements vary considerably between institutions and departments. Generally upon obtaining tenure, one is also promoted to associate professor. Less commonly, a person may be hired at the associate professor level without tenure. Typically this is done as a financial inducement to attract someone from outside the institution, but who might not yet meet all the qualifications for tenure. If awarded to a non-tenured person, the position is usually tenure-track with an expectation that the person will soon qualify for tenure. However, at some institutions (including Harvard), Associate professors are untenured and only rarely promoted to tenure.

(Full) professor: the senior position. In a traditional school this position is always tenured. However, this may not be the case in a for-profit private institution. The absence of a mandatory retirement age contributes to “graying” of this occupation. The median age of American full professors is currently around 55 years. Very few people attain this position before the age of 40. The annual salary of full professors averages around $90,000, although less so at non-doctoral institutions, and more so at private doctoral institutions (not including side income from grants and consulting, which can be substantial in some fields). Full professors earn on average about 70% more than assistant professors in the same institution. However, particularly in scientific and technical fields, this is still considerably less than salaries of those with comparable training and experience working in industry positions.

Life of a typical natural sciences professor in the United States:
Bachelor’s degree: age 18–22
Ph.D.: 22–30 (rarely takes fewer than 5 or more than 8 years)
Post-doc: 30–33 (highly variable, and multiple post-docs are increasingly common)
Assistant professor: 33–38
Associate professor: 38–45 (varies)
Full professor: 45–70 (professors were forced to retire at 70 during 1986–1993, this is no longer the case; retirement age is now at professors’ own discretion; most retire between 65 and 75)
Professor emeritus (retired): 70+
In addition to increasing salary, each promotional step also tends to come with increased departmental or institutional responsibilities. At some institutions, these changes are offset by a reduced teaching load.

Voorbeelden (AmE) fellow:
– In some areas, such as the natural sciences, it is uncommon to grant assistant professor positions to recently graduated Ph.D.s, and nearly all assistant professors will have completed some time as postdoctoral fellows. (zie ook noot 21 + bronverwijzing/-link)
“And you remained at the university on faculty. Is that correct?”
– “A teaching assistant. Graduate fellow“, she says. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 1, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, De Gezworenen)
“How many years did you have to go to school after you graduated from high school?” asked a heavyset black woman. – “Seventeen years, if you include residencies and the year I was a fellow.”

“You take a set of rooms in one of the houses, and repair to the company of undergraduates and Fellows’ sherry while I cavort matrimonially.” (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 2) [Note: the book appeared on the British market without any changes to its spelling and vocabulary under the title of “A Death in the Faculty”]
In fact, they can’t give nearly as many fellowships as they’d like, but if you come
, as the English say, with the honor but without the emoluments, they’ll find you a study, give you a mailbox, call you a Fellow, and require that you give a lecture on the subject of your endeavors. (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 2)

Kate’s life at Harvard settled down to something like a routine. (…) Gradually she came to know some of the other Fellows, women who regarded her, as she did them, as fortunate scholars having been given the gifts of time, space and community. (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 5)
I admit everyone I know who’s been invited to Harvard and then ignored – from Junior Fellows to the most Senior Visiting Professors – always think there’s a conspiracy to ignore them when it’s just the wonderful Harvard manner. (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 5)

23. ‘stage’ tijdens beroepsopleiding (vocational training) = traineeship
Vergelijk (AmE) ‘internship (OALD, 9th edition, 2015)
Zie ook de categorie Corporate World, note 8.

27. diploma, bul, graad
Op Amerikaanse scholen meestal: diploma
(AmE) high school diploma
(AmE) college diploma = (Bachelor’s) degree certificate(zie bijv. John Grisham, The Racketeers, chapter 32)
(AmE) law school diploma
Britse middelbare scholen kennen geen einddiploma. Geslaagde schoolverlaters behalen één of meerdere certificates. GCSE(s) = General Certificate(s) of General Education.

(Zie OALD, 7th edition, under ‘student’):

Pupil is used in British English and is starting to become old-fashioned. Student is often preferred, especially by teachers and other people involved in education, and especially when talking about other children.”
The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English
(3e editie, 2009) geeft de volgende Usage Note:
“In GB, ‘students’ usually refer to those in post-secondary education. Younger ones are usually called ‘pupils’.  However, secondary school pupils have begun to call themselves ‘students’ (or ‘school students’), too. In the US, the term ‘students’ is used for those at a university and in secondary school – ‘college students’,  ‘high-school students’. Children at (BE) / in (esp. AE) primary school are usually called ‘pupils’ in the US, and almost always in GB.”

“A postgraduate is a person who has finished a first degree and is doing advanced study or research. This is the usual term in BrE, but it is formal in NAmE and graduate student is usually used instead.”

Voorbeelden (AmE) undergraduate / undergrad:
Anderson held an undergrduate degree in computer science and a master’s in criminology. (Nancy Taylor Rosenberg, ch. 1
– private schools, undergrad at Georgetown (John Grisham, Gray Mountain, ch. 6)
– The Judge was a University of Georgia alumnus, both undergraduate and law (…). (Tom Wolfe, A Man in Full, chapter 12)
Thirty-five, forty years ago there were no female undergraduates at Dupont – or Yale or Princeton – and like overnight, the next day, they’ve all gone co-ed (…). (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 28)
– Everyone (…) who was (…) in the undergraduate division, Dupont College, or had ever graduated from Dupont College knew that feeling. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, Prologue)

Daarbij geldt de volgende Usage Note (in The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of  English):
“CE [= Common English] has to graduate from Harvard or, formally, to be graduated from Harvard.
AE has also ’to graduate Harvard/college/high school’.”

(Zie OALD ‘commons’)

I don’t find you difficult to deal with, no. I might if you insisted on defending women’s studies courses. (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 11)
We have to hire some assistant professors for next year, we talked about what fields we needed them in, and the chairman mentioned that we had had another petition for some women’s studies courses in the English Department. Our chairman is not exactly amenable to the idea of women’s studies (…), but the fact is Harvard has started a women’s studies program and the English Department can scarcely refuse to have anything to do with it. (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 11)

31. proctor
(AmE) proctor = surveillant

Voorbeelden (AmE) proctor:
– “‘Sweet Christ crucified, there’s a girl asleep in the library,’ the dorm proctor, Frank Grigson, told George the following day. (…) “Do us all a favor,’ Grigson said. ‘Find whoever she belongs to and have him get her out of here.’ If the girl was discovered, the unforgiving deans would revoke parietal hours for the dorm for the balance of the seester.” (Scott Turow, Limitations, 2006, chapter 6)
– During the French examination one of the proctors picked up a folded sheet of paper from the floor. It contained a list of French verbs (…). (John D. MacDonald, Cancel All Our Vows, 1953, chapter 3)

Voorbeeld (AmE) catalog:
– Charlotte mentioned how fascinating the French courses listed in the Dupont catalog sounded (…)
– That person, in the Dupont catalog, would be the R.A.

– Celeste, get me the course catalog. (Tom Wolfe, I Am Charlotte Simmons, chapter 9)
On paper, in the catalog, Buster Roth was on the faculty.
The fact is, as I hope you realize, I don’t know a thing about the Harvard English Department. Short of getting hold of a catalog, I don’t even know the names of the members.  (Amanda Cross, Death in a Tenured Position, chapter 6)

Sumner’s tuition had brought about an obsessive habit with the pen (…). (Frances Fyfield, Trial by Fire, chapter 12)

Voorbeelden (AmE) tuition = collegegeld/schoolgeld:
“‘Great school, he adds. ‘Astonishing tuition, but a great education’.” (Scott Turow, The Laws of Our Fathers, Penguin, p. 72)
“I financed my tuition with a federally subsidized loan.” (Turow, The Laws of Our Fathers, p. 223)

– “Did he do a thesis?”/ “He did.”/ “What was the subject?”/ “Street gangs.”(p. 377)

proefschrift = (BrE/IntE) doctoral thesis = (AmE) (doctoral) dissertation
– She refused (or was unable) to finish her dissertation. (…)  He helped her outline and reoutline the chapters of her thesis that she was too throttled by rage to write. (,…) doctoral thesis (…) > haar dissertatie / haar proefschrift (Jonathan Franzen, The Corrections, “The Failure”, vertaald door Marian Lameris et al, De Correcties)
Kalisha had just completed her doctoral thesis. (Steve Martini, The Jury, chapter 12)

38. (BrE) 6th form college & A-levels
(AmE) SAT scores /  advanced placement courses/tests/exams / Grade Point Avergae (GPA)
(BrE) A-levels
(AmE) Advanced Placement
(IntE) International Baccalaureate =
(Ned) Internationaal Baccalaureaat

Zie wikipedia. De maximale AP-score is 5.

Toelichting:
AP Test scores also help admissions officers decide whether your grades are an accurate reflection of your academic ability. If you got a 1 on the test but an A in the class, the class was probably way too easy. If you got a 5 on the test but a B- in the class, the class was probably very challenging. This will affect the judgments that admissions officers make about your potential. (link)

SAT Subject Tests are hour-long multiple-choice exams that are scored on a scale of 200 to 800. AP Tests consist of multiple choice and essay sections, last for several hours, and are scored on a scale of 1-5.

Many more students take AP tests every year than SAT Subject Tests (2.3 million versus about 500,000). This is because AP Tests are tied directly to the corresponding Advanced Placement classes. In recent years, the AP program has spread to more and more high schools across the country. To get college credit for these classes, students must pass the tests.

SAT Subject Tests are less popular because students only take them for certain selective colleges that ask for them in the application process. The most selective schools usually require or recommend two or three subject tests. These tests are not directly tied to specific classes, so students typically have more freedom in deciding which ones they want to take. SAT Subject Test scores can showcase your unique interests and talents on your college application.

Your AP scores also make a difference in whether or not you earn college credit for the work you did in your AP class. At most schools, an AP score of 4 or 5 will either lead to college credit or allow you to place out of introductory college courses.
SAT Subject Tests are slightly different because they measure students’ readiness for college-level work. SAT Subject Tests are sometimes used to place students out of courses in college, but you can’t earn college credits for doing well on them. They’re also less relevant for predicting college grades, although they still have some value. (link)

Zie Wikipedia:
There are substantial differences in funding, curricula, grading, and difficulty among U.S. secondary schools due to U.S. federalism, local control, and the prevalence of private, distance, and home schooled students. SAT (and ACT) scores are intended to supplement the secondary school record and help admission officers put local data—such as course work, grades, and class rank—in a national perspective. However, independent research has shown that high school GPA is better than the SAT at predicting college grades regardless of high school type or quality.

Historically, the SAT was more widely used by students living in coastal states and the ACT was more widely used by students in the Midwest and South; in recent years, however, an increasing number of students on the East and West coasts have been taking the ACT. Since 2007, all four-year colleges and universities in the United States that require a test as part of an application for admission will accept either the SAT or ACT, and over 950 four-year colleges and universities do not require any standardized test scores at all for admission.

Toelichting (AmE) GPA:
GPAs are often calculated for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, and can be used by potential employers or educational institutions to assess and compare applicants. A cumulative grade point average (CGPA), sometimes referred to as just GPA, is a measure of a student’s performance for all of his or her courses.

Most colleges and universities in the United States award a letter grade A, B, C, D, or F for each class taken (potentially with + or – modifiers). These letter grades are then used to calculate a GPA from 0 to 4.0 using a formula. The average GPA is 3.3 at private institutions and 3.0 at public institutions. (link)
