1b. vaste materiële activa = fixed tangible assets = (AmE) property = (AmE) property, plant, and equipment
(BrE) property = onroerend goed (= land and buildings)
(IntE) plant and equipment = materiële vaste activa, waaronder de installaties en machines (plant and machinery),vervoersmiddelen
(vehicles) en de inventaris (fixtures and fittings), maar met uizondering van het onroerend goed (land and buildings).
(BrE) plant and machinery = materiële vaste activa, zonder onroerend goed (land and buildings), vervoersmiddelen (vehicles) en inventaris (fixtures and fittings).

Voorbeeld (AmE) plant and equipment:
(…) the company could add about $2 million in cash currently on hand that were earmarked for plant and equipment. (John Grisham, The King of Torts, chapter 31)

1c. jaarrekening = (BrE) annual accounts, (AmE) financial statement

Voorbeeld (AmE) financial statement:
– Does your accountant have a current financial statement (…)? (Steve Martini, Compelling Evidence, chapter 20)

1d. balance sheet layout

(2) total assets less current liabilitites (totale activa min lopende passiva)

1f. vennootschapsbelasting = (BrE) corporation tax, (AmE) (corporate) income tax
(zie Penguin Dictionary of Accounting, p. 166)

1g. stock dividend
(BrE) stock dividend =
(AmE) stock dividend = (BrE) bonus/capitalization/scrip issue

2. turnover, revenue(s) / profit(s) / earnings / income

(BrE) turnover = (AmE) (sales) revenues*, sales( volume)* = (netto) omzet
(BrE) gross profits = (AmE also:) gross income
(BrE) net profits = (AmE also:) net income

(AmE) turnover:
(a) ‘verloop’ van personeel: ‘a high turnover’ is in deze betekenis niet positief.
(b) ‘omloopsnelheid’ van goederen.
(c) hoeveelheid verhandelde aandelen.

Voorbeelden (AmE) turnover = personeelsverloop:
– In John Grisham’s The Firm wordt het personeelsverloop in het advocatenkantoor van Bendini vergeleken met dat in de kantoren op Wall Street: “the turnover at Bendini’s is zero”/ “the turnover at Wall Street is incredible”.
– [H]is employees were mainly illegal immigrants, (…) and his turnover was high.
(John Grisham, The Brethren)
– “Now his daddy’s gone and the woman his father was presumably hitched to is gone. Lots of turnover.” (David Baldacci, King and Maxwell, chapter 32)
– “The turnover is awful. Friends are mostly gone,” he says. (Steve Martini, Double Tap, chapter 7)
“But you get a turnover, those restaurant boys, they don’t make a lot of money. You see ‘em a couple of weeks, theyre gone.” (Elmore Leonard, Glitz, chapter 9)
– Joe Walt ran a collection agency now with a high turnover of pursonnel. (Elmore Leonard, Unknown Man #89, chapter 1)
– I can’t pay staff enough to keep anybody good. I’ve got a turnover you wouldn’t believe. (John D. McDonald, Condominium, chapter 15)

(AmE) sales / revenues:

3. (BrE) depreciation / (AmE) amortization

The price of failing to act on climate change”.

Oxf. Dict. 1998) of ‘chiefly British’ (Nelson’s, 1998); Australische woordenboeken geven als toelichting now less often (Austr. Oxford Dict. 3rd ed., 2000) of obsolescent (= aan het verdwijnen) (Macquarie, rev.3rd ed, 2005), en het Nieuw-Zeelandse Oxford Dictionary (2005) noteren: ‘now rarely’.

De conclusie in The Cambridge Guide to English Usage (2004) luidt daarom: There is … some continuing danger within theUK of billion being understood in terms of the old value. Het advies is: to spell out numerical values involving billions whenever they are critical.

5. fiscaal nummer
Het Nederlandse sociaal-fiscaal nummer (sofi-nummer) heet vanaf 1 januari 2007 Burger Service Nummer (BSN). In Engelstalige landen verschillen de functie en de benaming van dit nummer van land tot land: (BrE) national insurance number (NI number), (AmE) social security number (SSN), (CanE) social insurance number (= SIN), (AusE) tax file number (= TFN), (NzlE) Inland Revenue Department number (= IRD number), (IerE) Personal Public Service number (= PPS number).

6. derdenrekening = third-party account / escrow account/ trust account / court account/ etc.
Van een notaris, etc. (attorney’s firm, etc.)
N.B. (AmE ook:) escrow = (1) onderpand, (2) in onderpand geven (= pledge)

Voorbeelden (AmE) escrow account / trust account = (Ned) derdenrekening
“Our trust account had just received $4.5 million”. (Grisham, The Racketeer, Ch. 27)
(…) the money was placed in escrow with a trust agent in Geneva. (John Grisham, The Partner)
Drummond had submitted [the money] in escrow (…) in a court acount (…). (John Grisham, The Rainmaker)
– It goes in a trust account. (Elmore Leonard, Rum Punch, chapter 2)

– She said, “You’d have to put the money in some kind of escrow account in my name (…). (Elmore Leonard, Rum Punch, chapter 10)
I have to deposit that amount in Michael’s name, in a special escrow account (…). (Elmore Leonard, Get Shorty, chapter 8)
The problem is we’ve come up light on Nick’s accounting for the client trust fund. (Steve Martini, The Arraignment, chapter 13)
– .... the trust account … (…) There had been little skirmishes over the Greeks’s indicretions with the client trust acount (…). (Steve Martini, Compelling Evidence, chapter 23)
“Do you often make personal loans to friends from your client trust account, Mr. Skarpellos? Under the laws of this state that is a segregated account. The money in it belongs to your clients, not you.” (Steve Martini, Compelling Evidence, chapter 27)
– All had signd draconian nondisclosure agreements requiring them to post a significant personal bond in escrow. (Michael Crichton, Timeline pages 20/21, Ballantine Books)
– Half in advance. (…) The second half in escrow account prior to your taking delivery. (Michael Crichton, State of Fear, page 41, Avon Books)
You take it and you make out the receipt saying you are taking it and holding it in escrow (…). (John D. MacDonald, Nightmare in Pink, chapter 5)
– After all, one cannot tuck large money out of reach in a trust account (…). (John D. MacDonald, The Turquoise Lament, chapter 9)
I’ll ask that the twenty-five be escrowed. (John D. MacDonald, Condominium, chapter 28)

Voorbeeld (AmE) escrow agent:
– The escrow agent that Shilling & Murdoch uses for all of its closing transactions. (David Baldacci, True Blue, chapter 85)

7.  social security benefits / welfare / (social) benefits / disability (benefit) / unemployment (benefit) (zie ook note 5)
Zie ook externe link.
AmE/BrE: welfare culture, welfare policy

(BrE) welfare = de welzijnsinstanties, de sociale dienst
(BrE) social security = sociale uitkeringen, sociale voorzieningen, sociale zekerheid(stelsel) = (IntE) (social) benefits

(AmE) social security number = (ongeveer:) BSN-nummer, (voormalig:) sofinummer

(AmE) social security card = sociale-verzekeringskaart

The BBI Combinatory Dictionary of English (3e editie, 2009) geeft de volgende Usage Note
“In GB, social security refers to the whole system of social welfare provision.
In the US, social security refers to the federal program that provides old-age, survivors’ and disability benefits.”

We co-operated with the police, and what do we get for it but the bloody welfare on out backs. (…) The papers are always complaining about single mothers on social security, well I’m not on any social security (…). After that you can bloody well ask the welfare to look after her. (P.D. James, Original Sin, chapter 50)

Voorbeelden (AmE) welfare = (1) (bijstands)uitkering, (2) sociale dienst (inclusief de kinderbescherming):
– The AFDC benefits [= Aid to Families with Dependent Children] that Carmen received monthly from the welfare department for support of her daughter. (Steve Martini, Compelling Evidence, chapter 21)
– Only welfare recipients get their checks on time from the state. (Steve Martini, The List, chapter 3)
– He was either on welfare during during that period or something else. (Steve Martini, The List, chapter 26)
Ives had an employee. Semi-retarded. Samuel Bogen, age 46. On and off welfare for years. (John D. MacDonald, The Quick Red Fox, chapter 10)
He said he’d be sent back to prison and he said that he was pretty sure the welfare would take over and split us up and call Momma an unfit mother (….). (John D. McDonald, One Fearful Yellow Eye, chapter 10)
he’d go to jail and the welfare would get us. (John D. McDonald, One Fearful Yellow Eye, chapter 10)
Welfare reimbursements are always less than the true costs of care. In this situation, the hospital makes ends meet by overcharging private patients and their insurance companies to cover the welfare deficit. (Michael Crichton, Five Patients)

– “By the time it’s all figured out, we’re eligible for Social Security.” (Baldacci, King and Maxwell, chapter 17)
Della Robia women in lawn chairs talking about Medicare and Social Security. (Elmore Leonard, La Brava, chapter 10)
They had all started to lay away some dollars for old-age income, but when the Social Security payments got bigger and the dollar started shrinking, they said the hell with it. Blow it all. (John D. MacDonald, The Scarlet Ruse, chapter 12)
Meyer had made one of his surveys of the elderly couples in the Fort Lauderdale area, the ones being squeezed between the cost of living and their Social Security. (John D. MacDonald, The Scarlet Ruse, chapter 12)
There was Social Security, the pension, the savings, the investments, the insurance and Medicare. > … het pensioenfonds, de AOW …  (John D. McDonald, Condominium, chapter 2)
I decided we’d both worked hard all our lives, lost our kids, we’d live nice the time we got left. On the pension and Social Security. > … van het pensioenfonds en van de AOW …  (John D. McDonald, Condominium, chapter 10)
– not only did she have a nice package of utilities stocks, plus the old man’s Social Security, (…) (John D. McDonald, Condominium, chapter 27)
The couple didn’t have Social Security, retirement, nothing. > AOW, werknemerspensioen, niets (John D. McDonald, Condominium, chapter 32)
But we are nowhere as old as most of these retired people, I’m seven years away from Social Security, and Elda is nine away. (John D. McDonald, Condominium, chapter 33)
– What she’s got is kidney trouble, and they put her on a machine up there once a week. (…) “Social Security paying for it?”- ” With Medicare.” (John D. McDonald, Free Fall in Crimson, chapter 4)

“He had applied for disability status under Social Security.” (John Grisham, Gray Mountain, ch. 8)
I’m living on $1,200 a month Social Security. (John Grisham, The Litigators, chapter 11)
About a month ago, one of my clients went down to the Social Security office to pick up an application for benefits, should’ve been a routine matter. He’s sixty years old and in constant pain from a crooked back. Sleep on rocks and park benches for ten years, you get back problems. (John Grisham, The Street Lawyer, chapter 17)
– (…) a social security card that looks like it’s been around since the Civil war. (Steve Martini, The Arraignment/ De Afspraak, vertaald door Hugo Kuipers, chapter 2)

At thirty-seven, she has been receiving supplemental Social Security benefits for eleven years, on the social fiction that self-induced drugs are a disability on the order of Parkinson’s diease. (…) She is given (..) a small stipend to go along with her perennial SSI. Upward mobility on the public dole. > ze geniet al elf jaar bijzondere bijstand (…). (Steven Martini, The Judge, chapter 14)

In desperation, Larry had even called a little birdie he had at Social Security who whispered in his ear now and then about whether payroll taxes had been paid on a number anywhere in the country.
“He had applied for disability status under Social Security.”(…) “He’s a serial claimant,” Claudelle said. “And that’s one reason we don’t take Social Security cases anymore.”(…) Annette chimed in, “(…) Really bad boys who have a racket with some doctors and Social Security judges. (…)” (John Grisham, Gray Mountain / Dilemma, ch. 8)
“I’m living on $1200 a month Social Security > “Ik leef van een uitkering van twaalfhonderd dollar per maand” (John Grisham, The Litigators, ch. 11)

FOUT – “By the time it’s all figured out, we’re eligible for Social Security.”

Purses and handbags should be appropriate to the occasion. You wouldn’t go to a business meeting with a straw bag, for example. The old rule that bags and shoes must match is gone (…) and women no longer feel compelled to match every outfit. Handbags should be as roomy as you need (…).

(Nancy Taylor Rosenberg, Mitigating Circumstances, chapter 4)

She fumbled in her purse, exchanging cash for the paper bag he held out like a precious gift (…). (Frances Fyfield, Shadows on the Mirror, vertaald door Auke Leistra in Schaduwen in de Spiegel, hfdst. 2)
– The boy had found the whole handbag trapped in the heather at the top of a bank. (…) The coins in the purse had been tempting (…) . > De jongen had haar handtasje (…) gevonden. (…) De munten in de portemonnee waren verleidelijk geweest. (Shadows on the Mirror, ch. 9)

She went to her pocketbook. The phone number written on an Eden’s Spa notepad, was in the Bay area.

Vergelijk ‘wallet’ / ‘billfold’:

“[S]he [was] taking her wallet from her purse (…) handing Sasha five twenty-dollar bills.” (Stephen Frey, The Day Trader, ch. 11)
– Eleven dollars in her billfold and a couple of creditcards. (Patricia Cornwell, Cruel and Unusual, ch. 7)
Mencken: The Englishman “calls a pocketbook a purse or wallet“.
Horwill: “In Am[erica], where for several generations money of as low a denomination as a dollar has been issued in the form of paper, pocket-book has long corresponded, in that sense, to the English purse”

– “(…) after he had folded this letter and placed it in his pocket-book, Nicholas Nickleby’s eyes were dimmed with a moisture that might have been taken for tears” > “Nikolaas Nickleby’s oogen, toen hij den brief opvouwde en in zijn portefeuille stak, door een vochtigheid werden verduisterd, die men voor tranen had kunnen houden.” (hfdst 7)
– ‘”Never was such a thing known,’ rejoined Squeers, taking a little roll of notes from his pocket-book, to see that they were all safe.
38)
– Mr Squeers took out his pocketbook and made a note of it. ‘Very good. I should say that was worth full twenty pound at the next assizes,
without the honesty, sir.
– “In short, it would have been difficult to have recognised the same man under these various aspects, but for the bulky leather case full of bills and notes which he drew from his pocket at every house (…)”
– “As he said this, he made some memorandum in his pocket-book in which Mr Mantalini’s name figured conspicuously”. (hfdst 44)
– “‘This is your pocket-book,’ said Ralph, producing one from his coat; the certificates of your first marriage and of the boy’s birth, and your wife’s two letters, and every other paper that can support these statements directly or by implication, are here, are they?’ (hfdst 45)
– “`You talk as if you were the only detaining creditor,` said Ralph, pulling out his pocket-book. `I am another for nine hundred and seventy-five pounds four and threepence.`” > ,,Gij spreekt alsof gij hem alleen had laten gijzelen,” zei Ralph, zijn zakboekje te voorschijn halend.
“On market-day (…) there were young farmers and old farmers (…) paying and receiving huge amounts of great wealth, with the assistance of such bulky pocket-books that when they were in their pockets it was apoplexy to het them out”(hoofdstuk 5)
Voorbeelden:
“He produced his pocket-book (…). Large as it was, it was very full of documents, (..) and having clasped it carefully, (…)” (hoofdstuk 27).
“He then untied the pocket-book and hung the string over the back of chair number one. He then drew both the chairs a little nearer Mr. Montague, and opening the pocket-book spread out its contents. Finally, he selected a certain memorandum from the rest”. (hoofdstuk 38)
In Dombey and Son  (1848) komt de volgende passage voor: “Uncle Sol, taking out his pocket-book, and handing out some notes as he spoke. “(…) Twenty-five, Sir.”” (hfdst 23)
In The Old Curiosity Shop (1841) is het Mr. Brass, de advocaat van Mr. Quilp, die enkele keren zijn pocket-book tevoorschijn haalt. De eerste keer om een aantekening te maken (hfdst 51: “taking out his pocket-book and pencil”), en de tweede keer om een bankbiljet te tonen (hfdst. 64: “Mr. Brass  pulls out his pocket-book, and says, “Well”, he says, “here it is – Quilp’s own five-pound note”.
In Our Mutual Friend (1864-1865) wordt het pocket-book eveneens genoemd om zowel een visitekaartje in op te bergen (boek I, hfdst. 8: “the stranger, producing a little pocket-book and taking out a card”), en om bankbiljetten in te bewaren (boek 4, hfdst. 2: “”Now, which,”said Mr. Boffin softly, taking out a pocket-book, “which of you is Cashier?”

While it is true that cable transfers and wire transfers are both methods for electronically moving funds from one location to another, one has to do with domestic transactions, while the other is focused on international transfers. The term of wire transfer is more properly used to describe an electronic funds transfer in which the point of origin and the point of termination are located in the same country”; zie www.wisegeek.com)

The telegraph is also laid down beneath the streets between the City and the West End, a branch office being situated at the Strand, (sending a wire to the Government Offices at whitehall), and another near the Albert Gate, Knightsbridge, communicating with the Crystal Palace, thus putting the various provincial exhibiting manufactureres in constant communication with their houses of business.”
